No. You do not need to have skied or snowboarded before — the lessons are designed for complete first-timers.

On skis: getting to know the equipment and the right stance, controlled braking with the snowplough, turning left and right, and moving on to parallel skiing. On a snowboard: getting to know the equipment and the right stance, controlled stopping with the heel edge, steering left and right, and the toe edge with basic turns.

All the equipment and clothing you need for skiing or snowboarding is provided. Bring thermal base layers, long thick socks, a buff or balaclava, sunscreen, sunglasses and your personal belongings.

The programme is suitable for ages 6 and over.

At the five-star Wyndham Grand Kayseri in Kocasinan, in Kayseri city centre. The hotel has a heated indoor pool, sauna, spa and a 24-hour fitness centre, and is 6 km from Kayseri Erkilet Airport.

Getting to Kayseri is up to you. Transfers from Kayseri bus station or Kayseri Erkilet Airport to the hotel, and from the hotel to Erciyes Ski Resort, are free; transfer details are shared 2–3 days before your holiday.

Skiing is done on two separate skis, snowboarding on a single wide board. On skis both feet move independently, which makes turning feel more natural; on a snowboard both feet are fixed, which takes a different kind of balance and control.

Skiing is usually considered easier at the start because your feet move independently and the movement feels more natural. Snowboarding can take more time and practice for balance and control, but once it clicks many people find it more fun.

The ideal starting age for skiing and snowboarding is 6–7. Adults can start at any age.

Choose a waterproof, breathable ski jacket and trousers and dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly. Thermal base layers, gloves, a hat, a neck warmer and good goggles are important too, and wearing a helmet is strongly recommended.

Lessons are recommended, especially for beginners. Learning the basics with a professional instructor speeds up your progress and lowers the risk of injury — and once your stance and movements are right, you will enjoy the sport much more.

The biggest challenge at the start is finding your balance. Because both feet are fixed, it is also easier to lose control when you fall. Both get better quickly with practice.
