Mount Erciyes: The Dormant Volcano on the Roof of Anatolia
At 3,917 metres, Erciyes is the highest mountain in Central Anatolia and home to one of Türkiye's largest ski areas. From its volcanic past to its ski slopes, here is what you need to know.

Whichever direction you approach Kayseri from, the first thing on the horizon is Erciyes. At 3,917 metres it is the highest mountain in Central Anatolia, rising above the city like a white cone in winter and holding on to its summit snow for much of the year.
What kind of mountain is Erciyes?
Erciyes is a dormant stratovolcano: layer upon layer of lava and ash from thousands of years of eruptions built its conical shape. The soft tuff that formed Cappadocia's fairy chimneys was largely laid down by eruptions from the region's volcanoes, Erciyes, Hasan Dağı and Göllüdağ among them — so Cappadocia's famous landscape is, in a sense, Erciyes' handiwork.
Climbing to the summit is a technical ascent for experienced mountaineers and is usually done in summer. In winter, the slopes belong to skiers and snowboarders.
Erciyes in history
Known in antiquity as Argaios (Latin Argaeus), the mountain was the emblem of Kaisareia, the ancient name of today's Kayseri, and often appears on Roman-era coins minted in the city. For centuries it has been part of both the landscape and the identity of Kayseri.
Erciyes Ski Resort
Today, Erciyes means skiing. Its slopes hold one of Türkiye's largest ski areas: around 112 km of marked pistes across 41 runs, served by 19 lifts including two enclosed gondolas, with the highest lifts reaching roughly 3,400 metres. The resort is reached through four gates: Tekir, Hisarcık, Hacılar and Develi.
What makes Erciyes unique is how close it is to the city — about 25 km from Kayseri centre. You really can ski in the morning and sit down to a plate of Kayseri mantı in the evening.
When to visit Erciyes
- December – April: ski and snowboard season, with the most reliable snow from January to March
- May – June: highland walks as the snow melts
- July – September: the best time for summit climbs and hiking
- October – November: a quiet season; the first snow usually falls in late autumn
Around Erciyes
Kayseri, Talas, Hisarcık and Develi sit at the foot of the mountain. Sultan Sazlığı, near Develi, is an important wetland for birdwatchers, and the valleys of Cappadocia are about an hour's drive away — which makes it easy to combine a ski holiday on Erciyes with a trip to Cappadocia.
