Bansko or Erciyes? Comparing Bulgaria's Budget Favourite with Turkey's Volcano Resort
Bansko is one of the best-known budget ski resorts in Europe. We compared it with Erciyes in Turkey on getting there, currency, pistes, altitude and total cost, so you can decide which fits your trip.

If you have looked for an affordable ski holiday in Europe, Bansko in Bulgaria has almost certainly come up. It has a reputation as one of the continent's best-value resorts, with an old town and tree-lined runs. Erciyes in Turkey is far less known outside the country, but it is bigger and higher. Here is an honest side-by-side comparison.
In short
- Bansko: a historic town at the foot of the Pirin Mountains in south-west Bulgaria. The runs cut through pine forest, and a long gondola climbs from the town to the ski area. Popular with British and European budget skiers.
- Erciyes: on the slopes of a dormant volcano, 25 km from the city of Kayseri in central Turkey. Around 112 km of marked pistes, 41 runs and 19 lifts make it one of Turkey's largest ski areas. Cappadocia is about an hour away.
Getting there
Bansko: the nearest major airport is Sofia, about 160 km away, a drive of two and a half to three hours. Plovdiv airport is another option on some routes.
Erciyes: most international visitors fly to Istanbul and take a domestic flight of a little over an hour to Kayseri. The airport is minutes from the city centre and the slopes are about 25 km from the city. Our packages include free transfers from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the slopes.
Entry rules depend on your passport. Bulgaria is a full member of the Schengen area; Turkey has its own entry rules. Check your government's travel advice for both before you book.
Currency
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so lift passes, rental, lessons and accommodation in Bansko are all priced in euros. In Turkey you pay in Turkish lira.
Pistes and altitude
Figures for Bansko vary by source; piste length is usually given as somewhere between 50 and 75 km. The town sits at around 900–1,000 metres and the top of the ski area at roughly 2,600 metres. Much of the skiing is in the trees, which helps visibility in snowy weather. The gondola from town is the main way up, and morning queues at weekends and in peak weeks are a well-known drawback.
Erciyes has around 112 km of marked pistes, 41 runs and 19 lifts, including two enclosed gondolas, with the highest lifts reaching about 3,400 metres. The runs are on wide, treeless slopes, and four gates on different sides of the mountain spread the crowds. Our Erciyes ski resort guide covers the pistes and gates in detail.
In short: Erciyes wins on size and altitude; Bansko wins on tree skiing and an alpine-town feel.
After skiing
Bansko's old town, with stone houses and traditional taverns, is one of its strongest points. The surrounding Pirin National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From Erciyes your evenings are in Kayseri, a city of Seljuk monuments, a covered bazaar and famous dishes such as mantı and pastırma. Cappadocia's balloons and underground cities are about an hour away.
How to compare the total cost
Use the same basket for both: flights and transfers, accommodation, lift pass, equipment and clothing rental, lessons and meals. In Bansko most of these are paid separately, in euros.
Our Erciyes packages bundle accommodation at the five-star Wyndham Grand Kayseri in the city centre, an unlimited lift pass, equipment, helmet, goggles, ski jacket, trousers and gloves, three meals a day and transfers into one price. See Erciyes ski holiday prices and the package pages for current prices and dates.
