Do Hot Air Balloons Fly in Cappadocia in Winter?
Yes, but less often than in other seasons. How the daily flight decision is made, how many days balloons actually fly, what a winter flight is like and how to plan so a cancellation doesn't ruin your trip.

Balloons rising over snow-covered fairy chimneys are one of the most famous winter images of Turkey. But can you count on flying when you visit in winter? The short answer: balloons fly all year round, but only when the weather allows, and in winter that happens less often. Here's how it works and how to plan for it.
Who decides whether balloons fly?
Every morning, the Turkish civil aviation authority's coordination office in Nevşehir assesses the weather and wind and decides whether flights may go ahead. Operators can only take off with that permission. Sometimes the decision comes with a hold: everyone waits at the launch sites to see whether conditions improve.
The main reasons for cancellation are:
- Wind: Strong wind at the surface or at altitude is the most common reason.
- Visibility: Fog and low cloud.
- Precipitation: Heavy snow or rain.
How often do balloons fly?
According to the civil aviation authority's figures reported in the Turkish press, balloons flew on 223 days in 2025, and the usual range is 220 to 235 days a year. That year, 754,098 passengers took a balloon flight.
In other words, on roughly a third of the days in a year there are no flights, and pilots say most cancellations fall in winter. Bad spells can last a while: in February 2025, heavy snow, wind and fog grounded the balloons for 18 days in a row.
How to plan a winter balloon flight
- Plan at least three mornings in Cappadocia. Book your flight for the first morning, so that a cancellation still leaves you a second and third chance.
- Ask about the cancellation terms. Operators usually rebook or refund weather cancellations, but check the terms before you pay.
- Keep your plans flexible. Don't schedule a flight on the morning you leave.
- Have a plan B. Even when balloons can't fly, the valleys, open-air museums and underground cities are worth the trip.
What a winter flight is like
- Later starts: In midwinter the sun rises later than in summer, so pickups are later too, but still in the dark and cold.
- Cold: In Nevşehir the average low in January is −3.6 °C, and dawn is the coldest moment of the day. Dress as you would for the slopes: thermal layers, a warm jacket, hat, gloves and waterproof boots.
- The view: After a fresh snowfall, the white valleys with dozens of colourful balloons are unforgettable, and winter sees fewer visitors than spring or autumn.
If the balloons fly without you, watching them rise at sunrise from a viewpoint is a wonderful sight in itself.
Combining balloons with skiing
Winter is also ski season on Erciyes, about an hour from Cappadocia. Ski days make a natural buffer: if your balloon flight is cancelled, you can move it while you're skiing, as long as you plan your Cappadocia mornings around your ski days. Our guide to Cappadocia in winter has sample itineraries, and does it snow in Cappadocia? explains the winter weather month by month. Flying in? See our Kayseri airport guide.
Our 4-night First Steps package runs Monday to Friday, which leaves the weekend before or after for Cappadocia. If you already ski, the 2-night Experienced package runs Friday to Sunday.
