How Much Snow Do You Need to Ski? Reading Snow Reports and Checking Erciyes

How much snow a piste needs before it opens, the difference between fresh snow and base depth, when snow cannons can work, and where to follow the snow on Erciyes.

Close-up of a smooth layer of fresh snow

When the first snow falls, everyone asks the same thing: is it enough to ski? There is no single number. How much snow you need depends on the ground under the piste, the type of snow and whether you ski on or off the groomed runs. This guide gives the short and the long answer, and shows how to follow the snow on Erciyes.

The short answer

There is no official minimum that ski resorts follow. But the snow measured on opening days at Turkish resorts gives a good idea: some runs on Palandöken opened with 41 cm, Kartalkaya with 50 cm and Sarıkamış with 70 cm. In practice, pistes open comfortably once there are a few tens of centimetres of well-settled snow.

Three things move that number:

  • The ground: A smooth, grassy slope needs less snow than rocky, uneven terrain, where stones would otherwise catch your skis.
  • The type of snow: Fresh snow is light. Once a piste groomer packs it down, it loses most of its depth. Seeing 30 cm of fresh snow in a report does not mean 30 cm on the piste.
  • On or off piste: On groomed runs the snow is packed and smoothed. Off piste it is not, so rocks and holes can hide under it. Off-piste skiing needs a much deeper snowpack and avalanche knowledge.

Why the first snow doesn't open the season

In 2025 the first snow fell on Erciyes on 8 September, yet the season opened on 18 December. Autumn snow usually melts in the mild days that follow. What opens a season is a lasting snow cover that can be groomed into pistes. So for planning, the opening announcement and the number of open runs matter far more than the first-snow headlines. Our guide to when ski resorts in Turkey open shows how opening dates have varied.

When can resorts make snow?

Snow cannons depend on the wet-bulb temperature, not just the air being below zero. Wet-bulb temperature takes humidity into account. According to manufacturers, snowmaking starts when the wet-bulb temperature falls below about −2.5 °C. In dry air that can happen even when the thermometer shows slightly above zero; in a mild, damp December the cannons wait.

Erciyes has more than 150 snow cannons and a 235,000 m³ reservoir to feed them. Artificial snow is denser and harder than fresh snow, and it lasts longer. In the first weeks of the season most of the snow on the pistes is artificial, which can be firm and slippery in the morning. Our guide to skiing different snow conditions explains how to handle it.

How to read a snow report

Resort and weather snow reports usually show:

  • Snow depth: The total snow at the measuring point, often given separately for the base and the top. The top usually has more.
  • Fresh snow: What fell in the last 24 or 48 hours. Great news for skiers, but on its own it doesn't tell you the state of the pistes.
  • Open runs and lifts: The most useful figure for planning. Even with a metre of snow, the upper lifts can close in strong wind.
  • Snow type: Powder, hard-packed, wet or artificial, and it can change between morning and afternoon.

A single measuring station doesn't represent the whole mountain. Wind strips snow from ridges and drops it in hollows, and sunny slopes melt faster. Read the depth together with the open-runs figure.

Checking the snow on Erciyes

  • Kayseri Erciyes A.Ş.: The resort operator announces the opening date and open runs and lifts on its official website and social media.
  • Turkish State Meteorological Service: It publishes snow depths for ski resorts on its website. On 28 January 2026, for example, it reported 105 cm on Erciyes.
  • Webcams: The resort's live cameras show the real state of the pistes and are far more reliable than first-snow news.

When does it snow on Erciyes?

Snow usually starts falling on the upper slopes in autumn, but a lasting cover forms in December. The most reliable snow is from January to March. Altitude helps a lot: the highest lift station is at about 3,400 metres, and in the 2025/26 season skiing on Erciyes lasted until 15 May 2026. For a month-by-month view, see our Erciyes ski season guide.

Planning around the snow

  • Book flexibly: For uncertain early-season dates, choose options with free cancellation or date changes. Our packages offer a full refund or a date change up to 8 days before departure.
  • Check a week before: Look at the open runs and the webcams before you travel.
  • Go midweek early in the season: With few runs open, weekends feel busier.
  • Want the surest snow? Go January to March. More planning tips are in how to plan a ski holiday in Turkey.

Our Erciyes dates for 2026/27 are set: 4-night packages start every Monday from 21 December 2026 and 2-night packages every Friday from 25 December 2026. Beginners should look at the 4-night First Steps package; if you already ski, try the 4-night Experienced package.
