How to Plan a Ski Holiday in Turkey: When, Where, How Long and What It Costs

A step-by-step guide for your first ski trip to Turkey. Which month to go, which resort suits whom, how many days you need, what goes into the budget and what to check before you book.

Planning a ski holiday can feel complicated the first time: when does the season start, which resort should you pick, how many days do you need and what will it all cost? This guide answers those questions in order, and ends with a short checklist you can use to plan your own trip in ten minutes.

1. When to go

The ski season in Turkey usually starts in mid-December and runs to the end of March, with skiing into April at the highest resorts. Snow, not the calendar, sets the opening date: the same resort can open in late November one year and mid-December the next. Our guide to when ski resorts in Turkey open has the details.

Month by month:

  • December: The season opens and not every run may be ready. New Year week is very busy.
  • January: The snow has settled and most runs are open. The first half of the month is one of the quietest times of the season.
  • February: The most reliable snow. The start of the Turkish school holidays is busy.
  • March: Longer, sunnier days. Weekdays on the slopes are quiet.

In the 2026/27 season the busiest weeks are New Year (1 January is a Friday), the Turkish school winter break (25 January – 5 February 2027) and the spring mid-term break (8–12 March 2027). If your dates are flexible, choose the first half of January or weekdays from mid-February.

2. Where to go

Turkey has more ski resorts than most visitors expect. Three things decide which one suits you: where you are travelling from, your level and where you want to stay.

  • Erciyes (Kayseri): One of the largest ski areas in the country, with around 112 km of marked pistes, about 25 km from Kayseri city centre. Kayseri is roughly an hour's flight from Istanbul.
  • Uludağ (Bursa): The closest large resort to Istanbul, about 2–3 hours by road. It can get very crowded at weekends.
  • Palandöken (Erzurum): High, long runs popular with experienced skiers, just a few kilometres from Erzurum city.
  • Kartalkaya (Bolu): Hotels sit right next to the slopes. A few hours' drive from Istanbul.
  • Sarıkamış (Kars): Known for runs through Scots pine forest and dry, powdery snow.

If you are a beginner, wide and quiet nursery slopes and a good ski school matter far more than the size of the ski area. Our guide to Erciyes ski holidays explains what the resort offers at each level.

3. How many days?

  • 2 nights (a weekend): A great break if you have skied before. As a first-timer you spend one day in a lesson and one practising: enough to get started, not much more.
  • 4–5 nights: What we recommend for first-timers. Falling and getting up on day one, stopping with the snowplough on day two and linking turns after that all take time. By day four most people feel at home on green and easy blue runs.
  • A week: For skiing plus sightseeing, for example a few days in Cappadocia.

If you can travel on weekdays, do: the runs and lift queues are much quieter.

4. What it costs

A ski holiday costs more than the hotel. The total is made up of:

  • Accommodation
  • A lift pass
  • Ski or snowboard rental
  • Ski clothing: jacket, trousers and gloves
  • Lessons or an instructor
  • Meals, especially lunch on the mountain
  • Flights and transfers

Arranging these one by one takes time and makes the total hard to predict. An all-inclusive package fixes the budget from the start. For example, early-booking prices for our Erciyes packages in 2026/27 run from $356 per person for the 2-night Experienced package to $622 for the 4-night First Steps package. They include a five-star hotel, an unlimited lift pass, equipment, helmet and goggles, a ski jacket, trousers and gloves, three meals a day and transfers; flights to Kayseri are extra. See Erciyes ski holiday prices for a line-by-line comparison.

5. If it is your first time

  • Take lessons: Learning from an instructor is faster and safer than learning from a friend. The most common mistakes are in 10 mistakes people make on their first ski trip.
  • Skis or snowboard? Skiing is usually easier on day one. Our honest comparison helps you decide.
  • Rent, don't buy: You don't need to buy equipment or clothing for your first trip. Bring thermal base layers and ski socks instead of cotton. Full list: ski holiday packing list.
  • Learn the piste colours: Green, blue, red and black are explained in ski piste colours.
  • Going alone is fine: Group lessons make it easy to meet people. See ski holidays for solo travellers.

6. Booking tips

  • Book early: New Year and the school-holiday weeks fill up first, and early-booking prices can rise as places go.
  • Check the cancellation terms: When the snow is uncertain, free cancellation or date changes matter. Our packages offer a full refund or a date change up to 8 days before departure.
  • Sort your travel straight away: Book your flight once the package is confirmed. For Kayseri, see how to get to Erciyes.
  • Fly home in the evening: If you ski on the last day, book your return for 19:00 or later.

A quick checklist

  • Dates: one of the busy weeks, or a quiet one?
  • Resort: where are you travelling from, and what is your level?
  • Length: at least 4 nights if it is your first time.
  • Budget: are the lift pass, equipment, clothing and lessons included?
  • Flexibility: can you change dates if the snow is thin?

If you have never skied, look at the 4-night First Steps package. If you already ski, the 2-night Experienced package is a good weekend option.
