Skiing Near Istanbul: The Closest Resorts vs a One-Hour Flight to Erciyes
Living in or visiting Istanbul and want to ski? Kartepe, Uludağ and Kartalkaya are within driving distance; Erciyes is about an hour's flight away. Travel time, altitude, snow reliability, crowds and which option suits a day trip or a weekend.

Istanbul can see snow in winter, but you can't ski in the city. The good news: there are several ski resorts within driving distance, and a much bigger one about an hour's flight away. Here's how they compare for a day trip or a weekend.
The options at a glance
- Kartepe (Kocaeli): The closest, about 100–140 km away. Good for a day trip, but low altitude.
- Uludağ (Bursa): Turkey's most famous resort, about 2–3 hours by road.
- Kartalkaya (Bolu): Hotels by the slopes, around 3.5–4 hours by road.
- Erciyes (Kayseri): About an hour's flight from either Istanbul airport, with lifts up to around 3,400 metres.
Kartepe: the quick escape
Kartepe is the nearest ski area to Istanbul, roughly 100–140 km depending on where you start. Without traffic it can be reached in around an hour and a half; at weekends it often takes longer. The ski area tops out at around 1,700 metres, which makes snow less reliable than at higher resorts, especially early and late in the season. It has a handful of chairlifts and is busy at weekends.
Best for: a day on the snow when you can't get away for longer.
Uludağ: the classic
Uludağ above Bursa is Turkey's oldest and best-known ski resort. From Istanbul it's about 2–3 hours by road, and from Bursa a cable car around 9 km long climbs the mountain. Hotels are right in the ski area. Weekends and holidays are crowded, and traffic on the mountain road can be heavy.
Best for: a weekend with a classic Turkish ski atmosphere.
Kartalkaya: staying on the slopes
Kartalkaya near Bolu sits at around 2,200 metres among pine forest, about 3.5–4 hours from Istanbul by road. Its hotels stand right by the pistes. In January 2025 a fire at one of the resort's hotels killed 78 people; wherever you stay, check the emergency exits when you arrive.
Best for: a weekend staying right by the slopes.
Erciyes: an hour's flight away
It sounds far, but door to door Erciyes is often no slower than driving to Uludağ on a busy Friday. Flights from both Istanbul airports to Kayseri take about an hour, Kayseri airport is a few kilometres from the city, and the slopes are about 25 km beyond. Our Kayseri airport guide explains the connections.
What you get for the flight:
- Size: Around 112 km of marked pistes and 19 lifts, one of the largest ski areas in Turkey.
- Altitude and snow: Lifts reach about 3,400 metres. In 2025/26 skiing lasted until mid-May. See how much snow do you need to ski.
- No mountain driving: On our packages, transfers from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the slopes are included.
- A city and Cappadocia nearby: Evenings in Kayseri, and Cappadocia about an hour away.
Which one for you?
- One free day: Kartepe, if there's snow.
- A weekend by car: Uludağ or Kartalkaya.
- A weekend or a week with the most reliable snow and space for beginners: Erciyes, by plane.
Our comparison of ski resorts in Turkey covers all of them in more detail, and when ski resorts in Turkey open shows how opening dates have varied.
