What Age Can Kids Start Skiing? An Age-by-Age Guide for Parents

When can children start skiing, what's realistic at 3, 5 or 8, when can they ski on their own and when is snowboarding a good idea? An age-by-age guide with tips on lessons, gear, safety and planning a family ski trip.

Parents planning a first family ski trip all ask the same thing: is my child old enough? There's no single starting age, but there is a pattern. Below is what's realistic at each age, how lessons work for children, and how to keep the trip fun for everyone.

The short answer

  • Under 3: Snow play, sledging and getting used to the cold. Skiing is the exception rather than the rule.
  • 3–5: Short, play-based sessions are possible. Many ski schools take children from around 3 or 4, often in private lessons or ski-kindergarten groups.
  • 6–7: Generally seen as the ideal age to start. Children can follow a group lesson, cope with a full morning and pick things up quickly.
  • 8 and over: Children learn much like adults, only faster. A good age to try snowboarding too.

Ages 3–5: short and playful

At this age, attention spans and leg strength are limited, and cold and tiredness set in quickly. Successful sessions are short (an hour or so), on the gentlest slope with a magic carpet, and built around games: making a "pizza" with the skis, stopping at a cone, gliding to a parent. The goal is to love the snow, not to master technique. Expect plenty of breaks, snacks and hot drinks.

Ages 6–7: the sweet spot

Most ski schools see 6–7 as the ideal starting age. Children can listen to an instructor, stay out for a few hours and find their balance quickly. They're also less afraid of falling than adults, which speeds things up. Within a few days most can manage the snowplough and easy green runs. Our guide to ski lessons for beginners explains how lessons work.

Ages 8 and over

Older children follow the same steps as adults, with more strength and more stamina. This is also a good age to try snowboarding, which needs more balance and core strength; see skiing or snowboarding?.

When can kids ski on their own?

There's no fixed age. It depends on ability and maturity: can your child stop and turn reliably, read the piste markers, follow the FIS rules and stick to a meeting point? Many families let confident older children ski familiar runs on their own with a phone and agreed check-in times, while younger children stay with an adult or an instructor.

Instructor or parent?

Even if you ski well, an instructor is usually the better teacher. Children often listen to an instructor more than to a parent, and you avoid the stress of teaching your own child. Use the afternoons to ski together and practise what they learned.

Gear and safety

  • Helmet: Always, at any age.
  • Layers: Thermal base layer, fleece, waterproof jacket and trousers. No cotton. See what to wear skiing.
  • Sizing: Children's skis usually reach between chest and chin; boots must fit snugly. See our ski size guide.
  • Sun and cold: Children's skin burns quickly at altitude. Sunscreen, lip balm and goggles. See staying healthy on a ski holiday.
  • Stop before they're exhausted: The last run of the day is when tired legs cause falls.

Planning a family ski trip

  • Choose wide beginner areas: Magic carpets and gentle slopes matter more than kilometres of pistes.
  • Keep transfers short: Long drives in snowy conditions wear children out.
  • Avoid the busiest weeks if you can: In Turkey, New Year and the school winter break (25 January – 5 February 2027) are the busiest.
  • Plan something for non-skiing hours: An indoor pool or sledging helps on tired days. See things to do on Erciyes if you don't ski.

Our programmes on Erciyes are suitable for ages 6 and over, and children join group lessons of 8–10 people. Families stay at a city hotel with an indoor pool, with transfers to the slopes included.
